Ciro Ciliberto was born in Naples in 1950. He has been full professor of Higher Mathematics (Matematiche Superiori) at the University of Lecce from 1980 to 1981. Then full professor of Algebraic Geometry (Geometria Algebrica) at the University of Naples from 1981 to 1985. Full professor of Higher Geometry (Geometria Superiore) at the University of Roma Tor Vergata from 1985 to 2020. 

He is member of the “Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei”, of the “Academia Europaea”, of the “Accademia delle Scienze Fisiche e Matematiche in Napoli” and of “Accademia Gioenia” of Catania. 

He is member of the editorial board of  various international journals and series.

Ciro Ciliberto has been invited to give talks in several universities in Italy and abroad, and he has been invited to many important international conferences giving talks and contributing to their proceedings. He has been Visiting Professor at many universities and research centers abroad.

Ciro Ciliberto is the author of more than 250 scientific publications, most of them published in well renowed and prestigious international journals. His main field of interest is Algebraic Geometry and History of the subject. His main research themes are: projective curves; algebraic surfaces; degeneration techniques and applications, Noether–Lefschetz theory, extendability problems, Gauss maps, classification of Fano varieties, linear systems of plane curves and nodal curves on K3 surfaces, obstructions to degenerations; abelian varieties, curves and their moduli spaces; projective–differential geometry of special varieties, focal properties, secant defective varieties.
